There are typically 2 types of cornices: upholstered cornices and Soft cornices. The difference between an upholstered cornice and soft cornice is a plywood (or OSB) board across the front face upon which the padding and fabric are stretched across. Essentially creating a rigid furniture like treatment for your window. An upholstered cornice is made by upholstering fabric to a padded, wooden frame. These Cornices can be either casual or very elaborate as material can be added for a 3-D effect and welting or rope cord used to provide accents. Soft cornices also called board mounted top treatments are mounted on a board with side extensions. The look is typically lighter and offers a greater amount of design flexibility. Fabric is simply stretched across the face of the cornice. The bottom hem may be straight, scalloped or cut into a shaped edge. Typically welting or trim is added to accent this bottom hem.
