Adjustable Curtain Rods

Adjustable curtain rods feature two poles of slightly different diameters. The smaller pole fits inside of the larger pole and may be adjusted to fit your windows. Adjustable rods should only be used for lightweight window treatments.

Adjustable curtain rods draw DIY decorators with their siren's call of cheap prices and ease of measuring and installations. While this type of rod serves a purpose, be aware the limitations of the adjustable curtain rod. Often adjustable sets advertise long span lengths but then use multiple pieces of rod to acheive this length. We recommend only ever using an adjustable rod with 2 pieces and usually for very small windows.

Drawbacks to Adjustable Rods

Tendency to sag so you may need a support bracket every 24-36 inches.
Actually may be more difficult to install due to the number of brackets.
If windows are wider than 72 inches there may be multiple center brackets not allowing you to close curtains.
Curtains tend to snag at the junction of the poles so does not work well with rings and grommets.
Most styles are made with lightweight metal and will not support heavy drapes especially over wide widths.
Limited widths available - usually under 148 inches.

Just as it does not make sense to spend a lot of money on an expensive mattress and put it on a rickety, ill fitting frame. Buying stylish drapes and putting them on a cheap pole may not be the best look for your windows.

Be sure to think about the following questions:

Do you need to open and close your curtains a lot?
How heavy are you curtains?
How wide are your windows?

If you any concerns, you may want to consider an entry level custom rod as an alternative.
