Sheer curtains are fabricated from transparent or translucent fabric and are used as drapery undertreatments to difuse sunlight. Sheer curtains are made from a variety of material including polyester, cotton, linen and silk. The different material will affect the look and hand of the curtain panel.

Sheer curtains are designed to be unlined and airy to create a soft ambiance. By choosing the color of your sheer curtain you can further add to the atmosphere of the room.

Sheer curtains can be used alone, or with another, heavier curtain so that you can have the best of both worlds – light when you want it and dark when you need it. Try to coordinate the color and pattern of the sheer with your other window treatements to acheive a harmonious design.

Typically, ready made sheer curtains are a single width (usually around 50 inches) wide. Two ready made panels are necessary for most standard windows 36 inches wide and smaller.

Custom Sheer Curtains

Custom sheers are constructed a bit differently than drapery panels. Because sheer fabric is so delicate and translucent, an expert seamstress is recommended for custom sheer window treatments as stitching must be flawless. The norm for a custom sheer panel is to use 3x fullness. This means that a panel ordered as 50 inches wide will be sewn using about 150 inch width of fabric.
